Coffee is one of the most traded commodities in the world and the most consumed beverage in Germany before mineral water and beer. From cultivation, processing and transport to preparation and consumption, international networks created by coffee connect millions of people around the globe. The special and travelling exhibition Cosmos Coffee, scheduled to open at the Deutsches Museum in 2019, will present this fascinating, often contradictory and in many ways mysterious drink from the dual perspective of the senses and the sciences.
At the heart of the exhibition are the manifold interdependencies inherent in coffee: natural product, but highly engineered and economized; handicraft-based, but globalized mass product; social lubricant, but also tool for distinction; everyday pleasure, but culturally charged consumer good with an at times revolutionary social history.
