It might be hard to believe, but this bewildering contraption you see before you is a coffee maker. It was designed by one of those rare companies who decide to make one thing, and to make it well. In the case of Dutch Lab this one thing is cold-drip coffee makers and the Korean firm produce some spectacular models with the coffee producing apparatus supported by architecturally inspired metal frames.
The Dutch Lab line includes pieces inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Big Ben in London, but Gothicism, for all its spires and rose windows, wasn’t technically modeled off an existing building. Dutch Lab is enamored with the steampunk genre and says the coffee maker is a sci-fi nod to the Victorian era’s “Gothic ambiance”. The team at South Korean design studio Dutch Lab, however, is going against the grain by releasing maximalist designs, each one more ornate than the last.
Over the past year, a small group consisting of an architect, industrial designers, a graphic designer and barista/shop owner Jae Wong Kwak has been building something pretty incredible in South Korea. The group is operating under the name Dutch Lab, and after splashy debuts at the 2013 Seoul Cafe Show and Coffee Expo Seoul 2014, it has introduced a complete line of industrial-design-heavy, slow-drip cold brewers.
This intricate cathedral-like structure actually functions as a cold drip coffee maker! Giving new meaning to the expression “the art of coffee-making,” Seoul-based design firm Dutch Lab built the towering structure out of laser cut elements fitted together with brass needle valves and glass tubes. The resulting complex technical device serves your daily cup of brew in style.
If you’re a fan of old churches, steam-powered automatons, and, most important of all, coffee, then you’re in luck. Dutch Lab, a South Korean creator of coffee machines, has created an item that combines all these disparate elements into a single, opulent package.
For those that love steampunk products and a cup of java, Gothicism by Dutch Lab could be the best thing since sliced bread. The design combines these two elements into one nifty machine.
